1,851 Acres

A Hunting Property in the ACE Basin, SC - Est. 1754

SOLD

Old Combahee Plantation is a unique property in a beautiful area. Its northern boundary borders over four miles on the Combahee River. The property is replete with important history. Since 1754 the boundaries of the Plantation have remained unchanged. Until the late 1800's the main crops grown here were indigo and rice. Today the plantation is managed for its timber and wildlife resources. It has both hardwood and pine timber stands, deer and turkey abound, as do many bird and wildlife species.

Combahee River

Although currently in a bucolic setting, some of our Nation's tumultuous history touched this land. In 1715 the Yemassee Indian Wars raged over this territory; local Militia and British troops passed over the property during the American Revolution and during the War Between the States. General Robert E. Lee established a network of earthen forts with cannon to protect against Union forces invading from Beaufort, South Carolina. Two forts remain on the property.

US Fish and Wildlife ACE Basin Refuge

The Combahee River is a jewel of the ACE Basin. It is a pristine waterway with very little development along its banks. It is a major migratory bird flyway and is also a part of one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast of the United States. It is a perfect place for viewing birds, wildlife, flowering plants and trees such as the majestic cypress that line its shores. It offers superb fishing, kayaking, canoeing and photography with unspoiled views. Depending on the tides both freshwater and saltwater fish can be caught in the thousands of acres of flats and creeks along the river.

Plantation House

In 1938 the plantation along with four contiguous properties was acquired by businessman C. Leigh Stevens. He named the combined properties “Auldbrass” and commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design the Auldbrass complex. After Mr. Steven's death in 1962 his daughter, Jessica Stevens Loring, acquired the Auldbrass properties and retained Old Combahee Plantation with its original boundaries for her family. Five generations of the family have enjoyed Old Combahee for its wildlife and rural beauty.

The Plantation House is located on a bluff along Izard Creek, a tributary of the Combahee River, with two docks and a boat landing historically called Schooner Landing.
